Determining cost basis for non-public REIT

Post by paulzn » Tue Aug 17, 2010 11:32 am

I own Inland American and Inland Western, and had submitted shares to their repurchase program before they closed. Now I need to establish the cost basis for the shares, and can't find any material on their site or in their documents that gives me the breakdown of interest versus return of capital for each monthly distribution. While I could use the 1099s for each year, the accounts were on DRP in some years, so the DRP balance would grow somewhat each month, creating a problem calculating that apportionment.

Can anyone help me determine this? What have others done?

Thanks very much.

I would first try to call the Inland Western/Inland American investor relations department. Inland outsources that function to the Registrar and Transfer Company, and the investor relations page is here:

It says that if you have questions regarding the purchase or sale of DRIP shares, you must call them at 800-368-5468. If you'd still like to email them, the investor inquiry form is here:

Good luck!
